Writing a Game Narrative

What to consider:

Player-character dynamic - how to create urgency and responsibility in the player

Sharp dialogue - fills in the gaps in the story

Setting - interactive space, intuitive environment eliminates need for dialogue

Pacing - timing and release of information is essential to keep players engaged


Steps to writing a narrative:

  1. Outline the story - major events in order

  2. Define the genre - defines the experience

  3. The game world - how much of it is explorable. Decide the lore, culture, language and history

  4. Character/s - protagonist, antagonist, companion etc. Define the characters traits and relationships with other characters. Explain how they will develop throughout the game

  5. Flowchart - or timeline to show where and when each event is happening

  6. Main story - solid foundation, could focus on major cut scenes - non-interactive sequences

  7. Flourish details - side quests that encourage exploration, NPC details and Items
