Logo research

Updated: Jan 22, 2021

What is the purpose of a logo ?

They represent a company or product graphically. It must be unique and recognisable and convey information about the game. It must also be memorable.

For games, they should present the tone, activity, setting and expectations.

What are the types of logos?

  • Monograms. Just letters, minimal colour. Acronyms and anagrams.

  • Word marks - The full game name, nothing other than text.

  • Pictorial marks - images that stand alone to be icons of the game they represent

  • Mascots eg Sonic. These are characters that are closely related to a game so their appearance Is a key identification for that game.

  • Combination. Both word marks and pictorial marks together.

Monograms are often clean and modern looking but hey are not always the clearest and most informative type of logo so may not be the best option for presenting information about a game. They are the least common and usually only occur if the title of the game is a common acronym or idiom that can be easily deciphered.

Word marks provide the full title and are most common. Its necessary to choose uncommon typefaces or make alterations to it in order to make it unique and communicate the right information about your game.

Pictorial marks are risky to use for games. It is great for conveying information about tone and game elements but not great for association. Best to use once your game has already. Gained recognition. You could begin with a combination logo and then eventually remove the text from the image.

Mascots are old fashioned and have become very rare. You need to have brand recognition before considering this.

Combination marks area the most common style fo b-video game logo. It’s a great place to start and you can take the best elements from different types of logos. However you must take consideration as to not make the logo too cluttered and overly detailed. Keep effects to a bare minimum.

Clean lines and unique shapes make the best silhouettes. Alter typefaces to emphasise tone. Alter the space between letters to highlight your intentions.

Eyes like to follow straight lines in images. Eyes are drawn down rather than up. And usually, the eyes will travel down before travelling right or left.

Pick harmonious colour combinations when adding colour to the logo.
